Consumer Protection | National Registry of Consumer Protection Offenders (RENAI) Becomes Operational

Argentina’s Undersecretariat of Consumer Protection and Fair Trade (the “Undersecretariat”) has launched the National Registry of Consumer Protection Offenders (Registro Nacional de Infractores – RENAI), in accordance with Section 49 of Decree No. 1,798/94, which regulates the Consumer Protection Law No. 24,240.

Pursuant to Provision No. 362/2026, the Undersecretariat established the criteria, guidelines, and procedures governing the operation of the Registry. Its scope extends beyond violations of Consumer Protection Law No. 24,240 and also encompasses sanctions imposed for breaches of the Legal Metrology Law No. 19,511 and the Fair Trade regime set forth in Decree No. 274/2019.

In addition, Provision No. 8/2026 (Official Gazette, July 24, 2026), issued by the National Directorate of Consumer Protection and Consumer Arbitration, assigned responsibility for the administration of the RENAI to the Directorate for the Administrative Coordination of Enforcement Proceedings. The regulation provides that, with respect to Consumer Protection Law No. 24,240, only final and non-appealable administrative sanctions will be published. It also clarifies that inclusion in the Registry is free of charge, without prejudice to any fines that may be imposed.

The RENAI will include, among other information, the offender’s corporate name, tax identification number (CUIT), case file number, nature of the infringement, amount and date of the sanction, and the applicable legal basis. The Registry will be publicly available and accessible without restriction.

Why does this matter?

The implementation of the RENAI strengthens transparency and public disclosure mechanisms concerning administrative sanctions in the consumer protection field. As a result, companies subject to sanctions may face significant reputational implications, while the Registry is also expected to encourage businesses to further strengthen their consumer complaint management, administrative compliance, and defense strategies.
