Foreign Currency Savings and Tax Simplification: Key Aspects of General Resolution No. 5822/2026

The publication of General Resolution No. 5822/2026 represents a further step in the ongoing process of reducing bureaucratic burdens within the Argentine tax system, as it expressly excludes from the current withholding regime the interest paid by financial institutions to resident individuals and undivided estates in respect of deposits denominated in foreign currency.

Although such income remains subject to Income Tax, the regulation eliminates the withholding obligation previously imposed on banking institutions, thereby allowing investors to receive the full amount of the funds at the time of payment.

For these purposes, General Resolution No. 5822/2026 incorporates item a.6 into Annex III of General Resolution No. 830/2000, which governs the Income Tax withholding regime. In practice, the interest will continue to be included in the taxable base of the tax; however, it will no longer be subject to the automatic withholding mechanism previously applicable, thus shifting the compliance obligation to the taxpayer’s filing and reporting process.

This measure is consistent with General Resolution No. 5820/2026, which regulates the Simplified Tax Return Regime applicable to individuals and undivided estates, and seeks to reduce the incentives for informality that have historically affected foreign currency savings, encouraging their integration into the domestic financial system.

Within this framework, General Resolution No. 5822/2026 redefines the tax mechanics applicable to this type of income: while maintaining the applicability of the tax, it removes operational burdens that had become unnecessary, thereby aligning with a broader regulatory policy aimed at facilitating tax compliance, promoting the formalization of savings, and strengthening the predictability of the financial system in Argentina.
